Religion, Spirituality and Sex

Religion. Sex. These two words, while they are invariably thought about much, talked among close friends, are sought to be avoided in public discourse. Much as we pride ourselves in being “modern”, “secular” and “liberal”, we shy away from discussing these terms.

Here’s  What the Bible Really Says About Sex” by Lisa Miller in Newsweek. It has an enticing introduction:

New scholarship on the Good Book’s naughty bits and how it deals with adultery, divorce, and same-sex love.

In the mainstream discourse on these subjects Christian theology, of course, for a long time has advanced a puritanical interpretation.

As for discussion on sexuality in Hinduism, the Kamasutra is well known. Notwithstanding the tantric traditions, much of the so called ‘mainstream’ understanding of Hinduism too looks at sex in, if one may say so, “conservative fashion”. Here’s a piece on Hinduism and Sex rather taken randomly, from among loads of material available online.

Here’s also a radio programme titled ‘Sex and Spirituality’  that I ended up making with some youngsters during a radio training workshop a few years back. Listen to it here.

Religion, spirituality, sex. They seem to matter to all of us. And yet, we are coy about talking about these subjects. Why? Any thoughts?
